The book Crank by Ellen Hopkins chronicles the life of Kristina Snow, an avid crystal meth user. Kristina gets sucked into the life of a drug addict and though she attempts time and time again to straighten herself out, she gets sucked back into the "monster" at each trial and error. This is a prime example of giving up when the going gets tough..
The book Before I fall by Lauren Oliver has a character in it who commits suicide because she feels like there is nobody in the world who understands and is there for her. She comes to the conclusion that her only option is to kill herself because she can't live up to the expectations of the world without failing.

In the book The Jungle by Upton Sinclair the family comes to America to gain all of the riches they were promised they could find in this great country. But there came a point where they failed so much that they quit trying to be successful and sunk doing degrading things like becoming whores to get by. All because of their fear to experience any more devasting failures. They just gave up hope.

Counteracting Failure

Though intentional failure is a secure way to never be let down, it is unhealthy to lead that kind of lifestyle. It is vital in one's world to try new things and not be afraid of messing up. You can become a better rounded individual if you only put yourself out there and feel the hurt and pain of losing. Just remember: IT'S OKAY. You will find that letting your fears loose will bring a less stressful lifestyle, and in turn will lead to perpetual happiness :) Besides, nine times out of ten, wanting something bad enough may just be enough to achieve it.
